Objective
Suicide remains the leading cause of death for young people in Western Australia, though young people have limited options for support. The Luminos Project is a novel pilot service supporting young people experiencing suicidal thoughts. The Luminos Project was co-designed with young people, parents, carers and relevant stake-holders in the community, and is based on the Maytree model in the UK, offering an alternative to medical-based services. The Luminos Project is a 4-night, 5-day residential service for young people (16–24 years) who are experiencing thoughts of suicide.
Method
This paper describes the Luminos Project Model of Care, which is informed by the co-design (outlined in a separate paper), and supported by evidence-informed practices.
Results (Model of Care overview)
The Luminos Project Model of Care has 4 pillars: Pillar 1: Safe, inclusive, home-like environment; Pillar 2: Emotional support; Pillar 3: Suicide intervention and management and Pillar 4: Skill building. The Luminos Project offers young people in Western Australia an alternative place to connect more deeply with the emotions and meanings behind the thoughts of suicide and develop skills needed to maintain safety from suicide.
Discussion
The initial pilot phase will provide an opportunity for a proof of concept for this Model of Care, which can then be replicated in other regions.
